When, oh when, will it be Spring?
I had planned to go down to the allotment today, as there seems to be a delivery of lovely rotted, steaming manure that I’ve spotted through the gate, (whilst driving by the site on one of my many ‘emergency’ trips to the shops, for items forgotten over the holiday period!!)
But shortly before lunch, it got very dark and cold and it has been raining ever since, so it will have to wait…..Spring seems a long way off.
Actually, the Big Irishman and I have always had a little disagreement about when Spring actually starts, so I thought I’d do a little digging around to see who’s right. In fact, if like me, you want to be real gardener, it would be quite handy to know the difference, for example, between early and late summer.
So I asked ‘Stan’ Staniforth who, aged 88, has been either a farmer or gardener for 75 years. Here’s his simple gardening ‘rule of thumb’ to gardening seasons in the British Isles.
As it happens, the Big Irishman was right!
