It’s the Hippy Hippy Shake
When I was a child, one of the best things about getting a cold was being dosed up with rosehip syrup. Initially mum made it, or bought it from the the chemist, when we’d finished it all up It’s tasty, sugary and completely soothing, and it seemed to have amazing medicinal powers, which are not entirely based on sugar, nostalgia and a bit of an old wives tale it seems.
As it happens, measure-for-measure, rosehip syrup contains 20 times more vitamin C than oranges.
It became popular during the Second World War, when the supply of oranges was limited, so schoolchildren, often billeted from town to the country as evacuees, picked rosehips that were then turned into rosehip syrup.
Yes, but have we got time for all this? Not only are rosehips all over the place in the country and in towns, but also rosehip syrup is very easy to make, it’s delicious and best of all, it’s free! (Well, freeish, save for the cost of a bag of sugar.)
